1
Prepare Your Pen and Needle

What you'll need:

  • Your prefilled Retatrutide pen
  • A new sterile pen needle (included with your pen)
  • Alcohol wipes
  • A sharps disposal container

First, attach the needle:

  • Remove the pen cap and set aside
  • Take a new sterile needle from the pack
  • Screw the needle onto the pen by turning clockwise until firmly attached
  • Do not overtighten - hand-tight is sufficient
2
Dial Your Dose

The pen dial shows dose units. Each unit corresponds to a specific amount:

Pen Dial Setting Actual Dose
10 units 1mg
20 units 2mg
40 units 4mg
80 units 8mg
120 units 12mg

Setting Your Dose:

  • Turn the dose dial to your prescribed number of units
  • The pen will click as you turn - this is normal
  • Make sure the dial is set to exactly the right number
  • If you dial too far, you can turn back to the correct dose
3
Choose Your Injection Site

Best injection sites:

  • Belly (abdomen) - Most recommended area
  • Front of thighs
  • Back of upper arms (if someone else is injecting)

Belly Injection (Recommended):

  • Choose an area at least 2 inches away from your belly button
  • Avoid areas with scars, moles, or bruises
  • Pinch the fat on your belly - this creates a good injection site
  • Rotate injection sites to prevent skin irritation

Clean the injection site:

  • Use an alcohol wipe to clean the injection area
  • Let the area dry completely before injecting
4
Remove Needle Caps

The needle has two caps to remove:

  • Outer cap: Remove and keep this - you'll need it later
  • Inner cap: Remove and dispose of this safely

Important Safety Notes:

  • Be careful not to touch the needle tip
  • Do not bend or damage the needle
  • Keep the outer needle cap - you'll put it back on after injection
  • If you accidentally touch or bend the needle, use a new one
5
Insert the Needle and Inject

Don't Worry - It's Really Easy!

  • The needle is extremely small - much smaller than most needles you've seen
  • Very little pain - most people feel only a tiny pinch or nothing at all
  • The injection is quick and simple
  • Many people are surprised by how easy it is

Injection technique:

  • Pinch the fat on your belly with your non-dominant hand
  • Hold the pen like a pencil with your dominant hand
  • Insert the needle straight into the pinched skin at a 90-degree angle
  • Push the needle all the way in - it's very short, so it won't go too deep
  • Press the injection button and hold it down
  • Keep holding for 10 seconds - count slowly: "1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi..." up to 10
  • This ensures you get the full dose
6
Remove Needle and Clean Up

After the 10-second hold:

  • Pull the needle straight out - don't angle it
  • Release the pinched skin
  • A tiny drop of blood is normal - gently press with a clean tissue if needed

Safely dispose of the needle:

  • Put the outer needle cap back on - be careful not to stick yourself
  • Unscrew the needle from the pen by turning counter-clockwise
  • Dispose of the used needle in a sharps container immediately
  • Put the pen cap back on your pen
  • Store the pen in the refrigerator

Needle Safety:

  • Never reuse needles - use a fresh needle for each injection
  • Always dispose of needles in a proper sharps container
  • Never throw needles in regular trash
  • Keep used needles away from children and pets
💡
Additional Tips for Success

Make It Even Easier:

  • Let the pen reach room temperature before injecting (take out of fridge 15-30 minutes before)
  • Rotate injection sites - use different areas of your belly each time
  • Inject at the same time each week for consistency
  • Keep a injection log to track dates, doses, and sites

Remember:

  • The first injection is always the most nervous - it gets much easier
  • The needle is designed to be as comfortable as possible
  • Most people find it much less painful than they expected
  • If you have any concerns, consult with your research supervisor
